http://iallt.org/webinars
We are pleased to announce the IALLT online learning community's webinar
series schedule for the academic year 2016-2017. Please make a note in your
calendar and be sure to participate in as many as possible. IALLT webinars
are now open to all, so please encourage others from your university and
field to participate as well. You might consider including IALLT webinars in
your language center's professional development series, or organize a
faculty learning community among faculty who are interested in technology
who watch and then discuss the webinar topics. Visit

presentations.

Occupied Paris: Creating Historical Simulation for Foreign Language Learning
Terri Nelson, California State University, San Bernardino September 6, 2016
2 pm Eastern / 1 pm Central / 12 pm Mountain / 11 am Pacific
Several time periods during the Nazi-occupied Paris are studied using an
instructor-created role-playing game (RPG) where upper-division French
students take on fictional identities. Underlying this virtual world is an
ARIS game where design mechanics scaffold student learning. ARIS is an
open-source authoring environment for mobile games, data gathering and
interactive story-telling. The presentation
will: (1) present the pedagogical choices made in creating the game based on
underlying theories of learning, gaming, foreign language acquisition, and
moral/ethical development in young adults; (2) demonstrate game play and
discuss student reactions in pilot-test groups and (3) give a brief
demonstration of the open-source authoring tool, ARIS (arisgames.org).
