Dear Colleagues:

The University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science and the
Arts seeks a highly motivated individual with a strong background in
higher education administration to serve as Director for the English
Language Institute (ELI). The English Language Institute was
established at the University of Michigan in 1941 with a small grant
from the Rockefeller Foundation as the first English language research
and teaching program of its kind in the United States. Since its
founding, the ELI has become a leader in language teaching and
learning at the University of Michigan and throughout the world. The
ELI offers a variety of courses in English for Academic Purposes for
nonnative speakers of English enrolled at, and visiting, the
University of Michigan. For more information regarding the ELI, visit

Responsibilities*

The primary duties and responsibilities include and are not limited to
the following:

Plan and direct the development, implementation and administration of
all teaching programs, services, and initiatives for the English
Language Institute (ELI) particularly those that assist international
graduate students. Develop and manage effective and efficient policies
and procedures that are consistent with University and College
guidelines. Develop and manage the budget model consistent with the
goals of the ELI. Lead ongoing efforts to strengthen financial
resources and practices of the department. Supervise ELI staff and
provide oversight for ELI faculty. Develop approaches to program
development and implementation in conjunction with ELI faculty and
staff.

Provide vision, leadership, and strategic direction to refine the ELI
curriculum focusing especially on the teaching of international
graduate students, outreach and service learning courses, and programs
for visiting scholars. Establish and maintain collaborative
relationships with LSA departments, programs, and faculty. Identify
and respond to changing academic communication needs of students
through curriculum innovation. Monitor the higher education and
international education environments for opportunities for the ELI to
provide national leadership on instruction in English as a second
language. Regularly review and assess the ELI's programs and courses
and measure their effectiveness.

Occasional Duties: Teaching if needed.
