Bob,
                Do a Google search for PDF to DOCX online conversion.  I use http://www.pdfonline.com/pdf-to-word-converter/ - it’s a free service that downloads a zipped file which you can extract easily.  I don’t know how it deals with really old pdf files but I don’t think there’d be a problem.  The files come out clear and without formatting problems.  Good luck!
