You might look at Hulu Plus. They are in the process of streaming the entire Criterion Collection for Hulu Plus accounts. More than 600 are already up. Here is a link to the German films: http://www.hulu.com/criterion/countries?country=Germany. Students would have to sign up for a HuluPlus account ($7.99/month), but the accounts come with a free 1-week trial.

You might also look at YouTube. Yes, there are plenty of films posted illegally, but now more and more titles are going up legally. For example, here is a link for M (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jewTfVC7XD4&list=PLD6E0BEB32FCBDBE6&feature=plcp) that has English, French, Green and Italian subtitles and a very cool interactive transcript (the gray button underneath the video to the right of the Like, Add to and Share buttons). The Blue Angel, Faust, Jew Suss, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Death in Venice are all posted by Openflix, and when films are posted by legitimate sources like Openflix (http://www.youtube.com/user/openflix) or Mosfilm (http://www.youtube.com/user/mosfilm), you should be covered on the legal front.

I’ve started making playlists (http://www.youtube.com/user/egarcku/videos?view=pl) of foreign language films from our collection that have been posted on YouTube (by other users, not us). They are in no way complete, but I am in hopes that they will make our students’ lives a bit easier.

Best,
Keah
