If you don't want to experiment with a new machine, you can buy a
machine that has been modified to play all zones, plus is MacroVision
free. Check out
http://www.world-import.com/dvd.htm
There are four players with built in converters (Akai, Daewoo, JVC,
Sampo). They also sell external converters. I was interested in the
Daewoo DVD 5800 which they sell for $159.99. I will try the $80 Target
machine to see if it works first.
I bought the Daewoo DVD 5800 for our video rack and it worked so well (playing PAL and non-region 1 disks) that I immediately ordered another one for our video viewing room. One of our professors is getting the same machine for his home, and I may do the same at some point if I can convince my wife. It's a great machine that I can recommend wholeheartedly.
