Greetings All,

As you may have heard in the news, Georgia State is a leader in innovative ways to advance student retention and progress towards graduation (RPG), particularly for first-generation college students and African American students. This is THE point of pride for GSU. The Department of World Cultures gets ahead of the “justification” issue by continuously underscoring how the LARC is a key component of our RPG plan, offering tutoring support, technical advice, and retention/social connections through activities in the LARC. Keeping our focus on helping students achieve in their language courses is our guiding philosophy, regardless of the mechanism through which we direct these efforts. It’s language the administration understands, and a philosophy that directly addresses the chief concerns of the university. It’s also the one service that can’t be co-opted through other service centers on campus, such as a media collection (library), computer access (open labs), video editing and creation (campus technology labs), etc.

Best regards,

Patricia Nolde

Subject: Reasons for the existence of Language Learning Centers / Language Labs in the age of iphones, notebooks, and other portable technological devices

Dear All,

What is the rationale for the existence of language learning centers and labs in colleges and universities today? This is a question that seems to come up every 5 or 6 years at many institutions of higher learning. I have been asked by my university to put together a list of reasons why these facilites are still useful as well as the ways that they can be put to better use. I would appreciate your input concerning this topic.

Thank you so much for your help.
