Languages Department Head, St. Paul’s School

10/21/2014
St. Paul’s School announces a search for a seasoned and creative educator to serve as Languages Department Head. This full-time position begins in August 2015 and encompasses a ten-month academic year contract. This position is a five-year appointment, renewable for one additional year at the discretion of the Rector, with the option to remain as a faculty member at the end of the five-year term. As a member of the Administrative Team, the Languages Department Head will be familiar with different teaching practices, inspire teachers in their craft, recruit and evaluate faculty, and lead the department with energy and vision.

The Department Head will be responsible for teaching two sections of the core curriculum throughout the year. The successful candidate will be a diplomatic leader, capable of leading discussions on what it would mean to continue to develop a curriculum reflective of global cultures and modern issues. As a thorough and flexible administrator, the Department Head will listen, observe well, and exhibit a willingness to work productively with administration as well as advocate for department members. Successful candidates will create and articulate a vision with clear goals for the department and a plan for how this vision will be reached. The next Department Head should possess the ability to provide clear expectations, support and regular feedback to all members of the department. In addition, the successful candidate will develop and manage the Languages Department budget.

St. Paul’s School is a completely residential, co-educational secondary school in Concord, NH, affiliated with the Episcopal Church and welcoming to all faiths. The School aggressively seeks applications from candidates who will promote a commitment to attracting and retaining a highly talented and diverse faculty.

LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT: Students not only master the mechanics of another language but also immerse themselves in the arts, traditions, and customs of those who speak it. Under the direction of the faculty – and aided by the multimedia Language Center – students come to understand different ways of thinking and living. The result is a consciousness that is truly global.

Extensive offerings are provided in five modern languages – Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish – and in Latin and Greek, taught for beginners through a multitude of courses for advanced students. Small classes ensure that students receive personal attention from faculty members, most of whom are native speakers of the languages they teach.

SPS students can improve their language skills dramatically through study abroad opportunities in Chile, France, Germany, Japan, or Spain.

REQUIREMENTS: Masters Degree (or higher) preferred. Fluency in two of the languages offered preferred.
The position requires varied experience in classroom teaching and an ability to communicate clearly and effectively with diverse constituencies. Ideally, qualified candidates will have a broad educational preparation, boarding school experience, and experience with mentoring young teachers. All faculty members at St. Paul’s School are responsible for a variety of activities typical to the boarding school environment, including advising, dormitory association, coaching, committee work and other duties. The faculty maintains a lively interest in pedagogy and innovative uses of technology. As part of a residential boarding school, the candidate must embrace the St. Paul’s School boarding culture and be interested in working and living with adolescents. Salary is competitive and based on experience.

Candidates should submit the following materials:

  *   Cover letter explaining why they are interested and qualified for this position, with emphasis on past leadership experiences;
  *   Educational philosophy statement
  * Vision statement of where they would like to see the St. Paul’s Languages Department in five years
  *   Current resume
  * List of three to five references with contact information
