Sign-up to Present a Poster at the Dartmouth Graduate Student Poster
Session

The poster session is scheduled for Wednesday, April 4, 5-7:30 pm in
Alumni Hall. Presenters must be able to attend the full session.
(Since there are limited spaces, now is the time to check with your
advisor to see if s/he would like you to present. FYI… in the past,
advisors have asked me why their students are not presenting.)
The poster session, scheduled for Wednesday, April 4, 5-7:30 pm in
Alumni Hall is being organized as part of Graduate Student Appreciation
Week and will display posters by Dartmouth graduate students. The poster
session is to display to other graduate students/postdocs, undergraduate
students, faculty, and administrators the research and scholarly
activity currently underway at Dartmouth.
Prizes of $200 will be awarded for the top three posters.
Posters will be judged on clarity of visual presentation, as well as on
how well the poster presenter can talk (briefly, 3 minutes!) about his/her
work in terms understandable by a non-specialist (though the poster
itself may be highly technical). In addition, only one presenter per
poster.
**** Poster Size****
We encourage you to use the School of Graduate and Advanced Studies Logo
on your posters.
FYI...
Your poster should be no larger than 3 feet wide by 4 feet long. If for
some reason your poster is larger, then you will be responsible for
making sure it hangs on the allotted space.
Please note:
Only posters will be allowed for the presentation of your work i.e. that
means no use of computers or other technical equipment. Additionally,
only one person can present each poster.

April 2-6, 2018
In recognition of graduate students and their
valuable contribution to the Dartmouth community.
In recognition of graduate students, DDS will offer complimentary coffee
(any size) to all graduate students at all of their locations, April 2-6.
In addition, on Monday, April 2 graduate students will only pay $5.00
for lunch at 53 Commons courtesy of The GRAD School. Make sure to read
our social media that week to find out how you can win a GRAD School
fleece vest!

Outstanding Grad Student Teacher Appreciation Lunch
Tuesday, April 3, 12-1:30 pm in DCAL (102 Baker Library)
Graduate students who have been nominated by undergraduates for their
teaching, either in a classroom or research setting, will be invited to
lunch at DCAL.
STEPS Science and Technology Policy Brief Workshop
Tuesday, April 3rd at 1pm in Haldeman 124.
STEPS is kicking off the 4th Annual S&T Policy Brief Competition with a
lunch workshop on how to write one! STEPS faculty adviser and
competition judge, Dr. Melody Burkins-Brown, will go through how to
present a scientific issue and your potential solution. The S&T Policy
Brief Competition has a $250 grand prize for the best 3-5 page position
paper. This workshop is the best way to improve your chances of a
successful submission! The abstract/intent to submit deadline for the
competition will be April 18th. Please email [log in to unmask] to RSVP

This annual forum allows graduate students to display and present their
scholarly work to the Dartmouth community. Prizes awarded to the top
presenters.
The Poster Session will also host the award ceremony for the Graduate
Faculty Mentoring Award and the Graduate Community Award.

Come have lunch with Jamshed Bharucha as he discusses being a leader in
Academia.
Jamshed Bharucha
Jamshed Bharucha is Distinguished Fellow and Research Professor at
Dartmouth, where he is based in the Department of Psychological & Brain
Sciences and the Department of Education. He began his academic career
at Dartmouth, eventually serving as Deputy Provost and then Dean of the
Faculty of Arts & Sciences. From 2002-2011, he served as Provost &
Senior Vice President of Tufts University, and from 2011-2015, as
President of Cooper Union. His volunteer board activities include the
Board of Trustees of Vassar College and the Board of Managers of SRM
University in India. For most of his career, his research was focused on
the cognitive neuroscience of music perception. His current research is
on using advance data analytics to reveal patterns in the financing of
higher education. His principal goal is to create a new national
initiative called Education Data Science, with the objective of making
higher education policy and decision-making more evidence-based.
Bharucha received a B.A. from Vassar College in Biopsychology, an M.A.
in philosophy from Yale University, and a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology
from Harvard University. He is an avid amateur violinist, having
received an Associate’s Diploma from the Trinity College of Music in
London. He lives in Hanover with his wife Jessie and son Arthur.

Learn about your copy rights, author rights, and responsibilities
throughout the stages of the thesis or dissertation research and writing
or creation process. Find out when you need permission to reuse a figure
or graph, what uses you can make of data generated in your lab, and how
to determine if you have rights to reprint a journal article you
authored. We will use case studies drawn from the subject areas in which
Dartmouth offers Masters and Doctoral degrees, so will include
discussion of software and other kinds of materials. This interactive
workshop is geared towards graduate students. Bring your examples and
questions! We’ll have time for individual consultations from 1-1:30

PRACTICE FOR YOUR POSTER PRESENTATION FOR APRIL 4th!
Learning to present your research in three minutes is especially
important for networking at conferences and interviewing for postdoc
positions and industry jobs.
The GRAD Office is offering a workshop where graduate students present
their research to their (smart, but not expert) peers and then receive
feedback on both their explanation of their topic and their presentation
skills. At the end of the session, the group will cast their vote on the
best presenter for a prize. Please note: no computers/ no power point.
Just graduate students speaking from memory.
A light lunch will be provided.
