Do you want to go on an Adventure?

WELL. WE HAVE SOME FUNDS THAT MAY HELP YOU GET GOING!

(This is a long email, but it has all the funds at once, so enjoy!)

THE FUNDS THROUGH THE DOC THIS FALL:

-Schlitz Fund-

The fund for that fun adventure with your friends

The Wolfgang Schlitz Adventure Fund was established in the summer of 2003 as an investment in the future of the Dartmouth Outing Club. It is intended to encourage DOC Members to:

  * Plan outdoor adventures that reflect the mission of the club
  *   Execute said adventures
  * Return to the club with new skills and experiences to share that will benefit and advance the Dartmouth Outing Club and its members.

The Fund is not intended to cover all expenses of a trip but instead to alleviate costs so that it is attainable to those that wish to participate.

Past trips have included:
    Backpacking in Peru
    Biking in Nova Scotia
    Mountaineering on El Capitan
    Trekking in Nepal
    ...and many more!

-Chris Vale Expedition Fund-

The Fund for that Once-in-a-Lifetime, Boundary-Pushing Expedition

This coming fall, the DOC will again award $5,000 from the Chris Vale '18 Expedition Fund with the purpose of sending outdoor adventurers to pursue explorative and expeditionary efforts far afield. Chris, for whom the fund is named, epitomized turning outdoor fantasies into realities through his adventurous spirit, passion, and drive. His loss still reverberates through the Outing Club community, reminding us to pursue dreams with the same devotion and excitement as he did every day.

So far, the 2016 Expedition Fund award allowed Gabe Boning '18, and David Bain '17 to travel to Alaska, where they are currently exploring remote alpine climbs deep in the Brooks Range. They are currently based out of a remote camp in the Brooks, as they attempt to establish first ascents of 4,000 ft granite walls.

-Women's Leadership Fund-

The fund for DOC Leaders looking to hone their technical skills to bring back to the club

This fund is designed to enable and incentivize female leaders in the DOC to further develop their technical and leadership skills, so that they can bring those skills back to their respective sub-clubs and further the culture of strong female leadership in the DOC. As it stands, there are many current female DOC leaders, but relatively few have technical training in their respective disciplines. This lack of technical training limits the scope of practice of many female leaders.

Please Note: Funding for men who wish to pursue technical leadership programs within the DOC is also available upon request through the general Leadership Fund.

-Leadership Fund for Underrepresented Identities in the DOC-

The fund for DOC Leaders looking to hone their technical skills to bring back to the club

This fund is designed to enable and incentivize leaders in the DOC that identify as members of traditionally underrepresented groups (including but not limited to race, ethnicity, religious affiliation, or gender identity) to further develop their technical and leadership skills, so that they can bring those skills back to their respective sub-clubs and further the culture of strong, diverse leadership in the DOC.

NOTES ON THE LAST TWO FUNDS:

Women's Leadership Fund & Leadership Fund for Underrepresented Identities in the DOC:

The DOC developed the Women's and Underrepresented Identities' Funds this summer as a means to address the lack of diversity (in gender, ethnicity, and otherwise) within our leader body, and particularly technically skilled members of our leader body. These funds present an excellent opportunity for current leaders who are interested in further developing their technical skills in a particular outdoor discipline to develop those skills either by planning an expedition or by enrolling in a outdoor skills certification course. In incentivizing and enabling leaders to pursue technical training, we hope that incoming and existing students that are traditionally represented in the DOC at present will see these leaders as role models, and ultimately aim to achieve similar goals in the outdoors during their time at Dartmouth. The Funds will be distributed this Fall as a pilot project, and after receiving feedback from inaugural recipients and other interested parties, will be revised and modified as needed in future years.

As it stands, the DOC has several existing programs that work to tackle this lack of diversity that we see, but most of these are designed as entry-level outdoors experiences. Previous efforts along this vein include activities coordinated by our subclubs 'Women in the Wilderness' or WIW and 'People of Color in the Outdoors' or POCO, as well as trips like day hikes led in collaboration with affinity groups on campus like NAD (Native Americans at Dartmouth). These spaces are designed to be more inclusive to people that may not have had extensive outdoor experience before coming to Dartmouth or simply may not feel comfortable in the context of our other subclubs. Each of the DOC's discipline-specific subclubs have also been working to be more inclusive in welcoming newcomers to weekly meetings and feeds, as well as running more beginner-oriented trips and more frequent and larger break trips.

The Women's and Underrepresented Identities' Funds take a very different approach towards cultivating a more diverse DOC, as they target leaders as opposed to newcomers. But our hope is that, in attempting to tackle this issue from both sides, we can help make the DOC a more inclusive space for anyone and everyone who cares to venture outside with us.

As always, please blitz any questions or concerns

- DOC President
