Teaching Science Seminar will take place this Friday, November 13th, from 12:30-2pm at DCAL:

Tom Jack (Biology) and Roger Sloboda (Biology) will lead a discussion of the range of approaches for teaching science to non-majors.  Here at Dartmouth, some science departments teach a wide range of courses targeted toward non-majors (e.g. Engineering Sciences) while others (e. g. Chemistry) do not teach any.   What should be the goal of a non-major course?  For example, should it simply make science “interesting”, or should the primary purpose be to enhance the scientific literacy of all students? Does the present distributive requirement system ensure science literacy for non-STEM majors?  Should we think about offering a choice of interdisciplinary science courses for non-majors that exposes students to more breadth than the current system allows?
