Grab a ringside seat on what’s new in theater! Fresh from a May gala celebrating its 25-year partnership with Dartmouth, acclaimed New York Theatre Workshop presents six new works-in-progress by some of today’s most interesting playwrights and directors. This year’s artists include a New York alt-cabaret star with a surreal tale; a veteran stage and screen actress teaming up with young South African theater-makers; playwrights from Texas and North Carolina telling important African American stories; and prolific young playwrights with compelling new work.

Week One:

August 5 at 4pm
Bentley Theater
Little Women/Aunt Pat's or Bust

Directed by Elena Heyman

Aunt Pat’s or Bust is a multi-platform performance project that follows the mind/life of 14-year-old Marjorie, whose parents have gone missing in an airplane crash. In their absence, Marjorie has figured out a way to support herself, her siblings and her legal guardian by working as an underage stripper at Aunt Pat's—a club that exists in an alternate dimension.

An Unlikely Bunch of Characters

By Kathryn Grody, Bulelani Mabutyana and Xolisa Kapakanti

In a fracturing world, is it possible for a white American elder actor/writer, to connect in an authentic way with two young South African theater makers? That’s the question this play examines as it looks at the process of collaboration in making theater, friendships and family, inclusive of all the obstacles and challenges that come with crossing class, color, culture and country. Grody, Mabutyana and Kapakanti are, respectively, a veteran American actor/writer and two young theater-makers from Cape Town, South Africa.

Kirk at the San Francisco Airport Hyatt

Written by Krista Knight
Directed by Jess Chayes

Kristina’s handicapped father Kirk lives in the San Francisco Airport Hyatt with his Ethiopian nurse/girlfriend. He can’t afford to live in a hotel but he’s had a theory for the last 32 years that he is not going to live much longer. The catch is that he continues to. He lives every day, paralyzed and joyous, like he is going to die tomorrow. Now he’s running out of money.
