MAV is committed to increasing inclusion and intersectionality in sexual violence prevention work at Dartmouth. To further this goal, throughout the summer, weekly educational emails will be sent to campus covering a topic that might often be overlooked in typical sexual violence prevention forums.

This Week in Sexual Violence Prevention Education:

Increasing Visibility for Asexual and Aromantic Identities in Gender Equity and Sexual Violence Prevention & Response work

What is Asexuality?<https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2P6NkQT1VjUWEVPckJtRVFkYkk/view?usp=sharing><https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2P6NkQT1VjUWEVPckJtRVFkYkk/view?usp=sharing>

What is Aromanticism?<https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2P6NkQT1VjUc3pjSFlSMGNQOXc/view?usp=sharing><https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2P6NkQT1VjUc3pjSFlSMGNQOXc/view?usp=sharing>

It is important to note that behaviors such as abstinence or low sexual activity are not the same as Asexuality or Aromanticism. The latter are stable identities and the former are behaviors that change based on circumstance.

Sexual violence prevention work has often used a framework that assumes all individuals are allosexual (someone who experiences sexual attraction). This assumption erases individuals who may be Asexual or Aromantic, and thus may not experience sexual desire.

An integral part of sexual violence prevention work is promoting healthy behaviors in sexual interactions. However, we must also create space for other identities in the conversation. MAV is committed to raising awareness about and education around these identities so that our efforts to promote healthy behaviors do not erase the voices of ace / aro individuals.
