Enjoy coming to DPS events? Want to get more involved in the Physics and Astronomy department? Interested in taking on a leadership role?

Then come and VOTE at the DPS Annual Officer Elections!
Tuesday, April 5 at 4:00 pm, Wilder Rm. 9 (the Cave)

If you are interested in running, please come to the elections and be prepared to explain, in a 2-5 minutes speech, what position you'd like to run for and why you'd be a good candidate. Voting will immediately follow candidate speeches.

The positions are:

President: The President serves as the leader of the DPS and is responsible for the overarching vision for the Society. He or She ensures that everything runs smoothly and successfully, from the minutiae of managing individual events, to leading the DPS in its overarching function as a pre-professional and social society for physics and astronomy students. The President works closely with College representatives (i.e. COSO, Dimensions Team, etc.), the DPS Faculty Advisor, the Department Chair, the Faculty, and maintains a relationship with DPS Donors. He or She is likewise responsible for responsibly delegating tasks to fellow officers to distribute event organization tasks fairly and efficiently, and is expected to be in attendance at the majority of DPS events. Most importantly, the President is responsible for bringing new ideas for the future of DPS to the table to make sure that the Society stays maximally helpful and responsive to current Physics and Astronomy students. On average, the position requires 2-5 hours of time per week.

Vice President: The Vice President serves as both an adviser to the president and as a facilitator and executor of the president's vision for the Society. Broadly speaking, this typically includes working closely with the president, treasurer, and secretary to bring all the pieces of the Society together and make sure the president's plans for the term come to fruition. This often takes on an event planning and execution role, but it can also include liaising with faculty, composing emails, talking to other students and any other miscellaneous tasks that need to be accomplished. The Vice President is expected to be in attendance at the majority of DPS events. On average, the position requires 2-5 hours of time per week.

Treasurer: The Treasurer of the Dartmouth Physics Society manages the monetary assets of the Society. Primarily, the Treasurer interfaces with COSO to deposit funds into the Society's account, withdraw funds from its account, attend termly COSO policy meetings, apply annually for the transfer of the funds in our account from one academic year to the next, and apply for funds from COSO rather than fundraising if necessary. Applying for COSO funds outside of those received from Society fundraising requires filling out an extensive application and attending a COSO meeting to explain the request. Withdrawing funds from our account requires a brief application. In all circumstances, carefully tracking line-item orders and receipts is necessary. Regularly keeping track of the Society’s funds and attending COSO meetings when necessary is vital to the position. The Treasurer likewise manages the logistics of ordering DPS merchandise (i.e. t-shirts). Previous experience with COSO is not necessary, but it is helpful. On average, the position rarely requires more than one hour a week of time.

Secretary: The Dartmouth Physics Society Secretary is primarily responsible for keeping records and correspondence. The secretary should take notes every executive meeting and promptly send those notes to each executive member after the meeting comes to a close. The secretary is also required to send out blitzes concerning upcoming meetings and events. These emails may be sent out to the entire student body, via the campus listserv, or just the members of the Dartmouth Physics Society, via the DPS blitz list. Finally, the secretary is responsible for maintaining the DPS e-list and facilitating the club's transition to OrgSync as the college makes the change over the next few years. On average, the position rarely requires more than one hour a week of time.
