Film Events This Week:

Monday, April 6th, 6-7pm: Dartmouth Film Society Meeting (Wilson 205)

The Dartmouth Film Society is a student organization that meets once a week to discuss the films playing at the Hopkins Center, debate important issues (like whether Ghostbusters is the best film of all time), write program notes, critique new movie trailers and vote on series proposals for future terms. You don’t have to be an expert - you just have to have an opinion!

Wednesday, April 8th, 4pm & 7pm: Sustainability Salon Movie Screening: “Islands of Sanctuary” (Steele 006, Free and Open to the Public)

Hosted by Terry Tempest Williams. Join director Toby McLeod for a film screening of “Islands of Sanctuary” from the “Standing on Sacred Ground” film series. Around the world, indigenous communities stand in the way of government megaprojects. In the Russian Republic of Altai, traditional native people create their own mountain parks to rein in tourism and resist a gas pipeline that would cut through a World Heritage Site. In northern California, Winnemem Wintu girls grind herbs on a sacred medicine rock, as elders protest U.S. government plans to enlarge one of the West’s biggest dams and forever submerge this touchstone of a tribe.

4:00 PM – Film, 5:00 PM – Q&A with Toby McLeod, director.

7:00 PM – Film, 8:00 PM – Q&A with Toby McLeod, director

Thursday, April 9th, 7pm: National Theatre Live in HD: “A View From the Bridge”

(Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $10 for students)

Don’t miss a stellar cast led by Mark Strong (The Imitation Game; Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) in the Young Vic’s ‘magnetic, electrifying, astonishingly bold’ production. The Evening Standard, Guardian and Independent rated it their top theatre pick of 2014. The great playwright Arthur Miller confronts the American dream in this dark and passionate tale. The story revolves around the central character Eddie Carbone’s unhealthy, possessive love for his 17-year-old niece, who has lived with Eddie and his wife since the death of her mother years earlier. When the family take in two illegal immigrants from Italy, Eddie seethes with anger and resentment as the young, innocent Catherine falls in love with the younger of the two brothers. The tension builds inexorably, and flares into violent confrontation and betrayal. Like the lawyer who narrates the story, we watch the action appalled, knowing that something dreadful is going to happen. It is just a question of when, and how. (180m)

Friday, April 10th, 6:30pm & 8:30pm: Film Special: “British Arrows: The Best UK Ads of 2014” (Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $5 for students)

This year’s brisk program is an eclectic mix of riveting drama and distinctly British wit, produced with inspiring creativity. High-tech, low-tech or no-tech doesn’t matter. Saturday, April 11th, 5pm & 8pm: Hop Film: “Foxcatcher”

(Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $5 for students)

Bennett Miller (Capote, Moneyball) delivers a searing true-life account of three men grappling for their versions of the American Dream. A virtually unrecognizable Steve Carell earned a Best Actor nod as the eccentric heir John du Pont. Obsessed with wrestling, he invites champion brothers Mark and Dave Schultz (Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo) to train at his estate for the 1988 Seoul Games. There, the trio is propelled towards a tragedy no one could have foreseen. D: Bennett Miller, US, 2014, Runtime: 129 min. https://hop.dartmouth.edu/Online/hopfilmfoxcatcher

Sunday, April 12th, 4pm: DFS Film: “Mommy”

(Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $5 for students)

Xavier Dolan (at age 25!) returns to familiar ground (boys and their moms) with his fifth feature, which shared the 2014 Cannes Jury Prize with no less than Jean-Luc Godard. Raw and exuberant, Mommy chronicles the turbulent relationship between an unhinged teenager and his brash single mother. “It is a pocket opera of grandiose self-pity, a wild an uncompromising demand for attention, a cri de coeur from the selfie generation” (New York Times). D: Xavier Dolan, CAN, 2014, subtitled, 140m https://hop.dartmouth.edu/Online/dfsfilmmommy
