Film Events This Week:

Tuesday, April 21st, 7pm: EYEWASH: JAIME E. OLIVER LA ROSA (VAC001, Black Family Visual Arts Center, Free and Open to the Public)

Oliver La Rosa’s music and research explores the concept of musical instrument in electronic and computer music, designing instruments that listen, understand, remember and respond. His open source Silent Drum and MANO controllers use computer vision techniques to continuously track and classify hand gestures. His most recent research [notes] explores computer assisted notation and generative music in Pure Data and LilyPond. His work has been featured in many international festivals and conferences, collaborating with several composers, improvisers and artists in a field of action that spans sound performance and installation, composing and performing music, and programming open source software. Some recognitions include scholarships and grants from the Fulbright Commission, the University of California, Meet the Composer and the Ministry of Culture of Spain, and composition and research residencies at ZKM and IRCAM. He obtained the 1st prize in FILE PRIX LUX 2010, a GIGA-HERTZ-PREIS 2010 special prize from ZKM and the 1st prize in the 2009 Guthman Competition from the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology. http://dartmouth.edu/events/event?event=34251

Tuesday, April 21st, 7pm: A Tribute to Abderrahmane Sissako with his new film "Timbuktu" (Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $5 for students)

Abderrahmane Sissako, who was born in Mauritania but works mostly in Mali, is today among Africa’s foremost living filmmakers. He has risen to international influence with such notable films as the lyrical, understated drama Waiting for Happiness (2002) and the anti-globalization legal comedy-drama Bamako (2006). Sissako’s transnational poetic vision is grounded in precise portraits of everyday acts and humanity. His new work Timbuktu (2014) represents a major breakthrough for the director. It was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and recently received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. A too-timely story about everyday life and resistance under jihadist militants, it might be the most prominent, ambitious and passionate film he’s made yet. Ever since its premiere, the film’s topicality has only grown—as has the power of its humanism. https://hop.dartmouth.edu/Online/tributetosissako

Friday, April 24th, 7pm: Hop Film: “Leviathan”

(Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $5 for students)

Director Andrey Zvyagintsev describes his darkly comic thriller as a loose retelling of the Book of Job. An ordinary man must wrestle with his faith not in God but in the Russian state — an epic struggle against a monster with many faces possessed of the capacity to bend the law to suit its own appetites. Resistance is futile, as they say, and yet this stunning satire’s embattled patriarch valiantly perseveres for the sake of his family, even as it crumbles around him. D: Andrey Zvyagintsev, Russia, subtitled, 2014, Runtime: 140 min. https://hop.dartmouth.edu/Online/hopfilmleviathan

Saturday, April 25th, 12:30pm: Met Opera in HD: “Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci”

(Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $10 for students)

Opera’s most enduring and tragic double bill returns in an evocative new production designed by Rae Smith (War Horse), who sets the action across two time periods in the same Sicilian village. Marcelo Álvarez sings dual tenor roles of the unrepentant seducer in the first and the clown in the second. Eva-Maria Westbroek and Patricia Racette are the unlucky heroines and Fabio Luisi is on the podium. Runtime: 210 min.

Saturday, April 25th, 5pm & 8pm: Hop Film: “Maps to the Stars”

(Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $5 for students)

With echoes of All About Eve and Sunset Boulevard, David Cronenberg’s (A History of Violence) satirical Hollywood-noir is twisty, twisted, and far from the predictable platitudes about celebrity culture. Julianne Moore goes for broke as a fading actress haunted by her dead screen-legend mother, Mia Wasikowska creeps in as her ambitious assistant with a shady past, and John Cusack delights as a self-help quack. “Crisply directed, furiously paced and gleefully performed” (The Atlantic). D: David Cronenberg, US, 2015, Runtime: 111 min. https://hop.dartmouth.edu/Online/hopfilmmapstothestars

Sunday, April 26th, 4pm: DFS Film: “S#x Acts”

(Loew Auditorium, Black Family Visual Arts Center, $5 for students)

Hungry for peer approval, a vulnerable teen in a new school dispenses sexual favors among the popular boys. This raw and realistic Israeli drama explores the ambiguity of sexual consent and remarkably manages to raise an alarm while demonizing no one. “There are times when 'no means no' seems like an incomplete response to an enormously touchy problem—especially as it affects teenagers, a demographic not known for prudent lust management” (NPR). D: Jonathan Gurfinkel, Israel, subtitled, 2013, Runtime: 100 min.
