To the Dartmouth Community,

The Greek Leadership Council would like to address the Bloods and Crips themed event that took place on July 26th at Alpha Delta fraternity with the support of Tri Delta sorority.

The GLC, on behalf of the Greek community at Dartmouth, feels disappointed and embarrassed by the decisions which led to this event as well as the lack of public response to its occurrence. We recognise that the Bloods and Crips theme displays an arrogant ignorance of the world that we live in. The GLC accepts our part in failing to adequately address this offensive event with immediacy and transparency.

Last week the GLC was contacted by the Bias Incident Response Team (BIRT) confirming the event and offering to support student led policy change. In collaboration with BIRT the GLC has created a working group to lead these changes. The organisations of AD and DDD have committed to spearhead this GLC policy to its completion. Their goal is to implement policy to prevent future offensive event themes. They will also create a protocol for appropriately responding to any future events. The current working group of students includes leadership from both chapters and will work in collaboration with GLC, GLOS and OPAL.

The GLC recognises that though this incident is of exceptional magnitude, it is not in isolation. We respect our peers in AD and DDD for taking responsibility not just for this event but for the prevention of future events that marginalise and disregard the experiences of our peers.

The GLC appreciates the respect for student led change shown by BIRT through their offer of support and collaboration. We hope that by setting clear expectations and supporting conscientious and respectful decision-making we can work towards a more inclusive Greek community.

Sincerely,

The Greek Leadership Council 13X
