You don't have to be a woman or a DOC member!

What is Women in the Wilderness?

Women in the Wilderness was started by Dartmouth women in 1992 because at that time, the DOC was a highly male-dominated group. These women wanted to create a supportive environment in which they could develop leadership and outdoors skills. In the past 20 years, the DOC has seen enormous change in gender dynamic. Many members say one of their favorite elements of the club is its lack of gender-based boundaries. Yet, there remains a gender gap in subsets of the global outdoors community, and at Dartmouth many women refrain from participating in activities due to a lack of confidence or fear of not having enough previous experience. In response to an online survey presented to the DOC community during 14F, 100 of 123 responders indicated that the DOC would benefit from a self-identifying all women's group. Now it's 15W, and Women in the Wilderness is back! WIW will be a group focused on mentorship, friendship, and skills that will meet weekly and run a handful of outdoors trips per term. Outings will range from cross-country ski outings to cabin overnights, and Presi traverses to climbing gym sessions. While there will be only female leaders, the group at large will be gender-inclusive. WIW is focused on providing a space for women to learn from one another and form relationships across class years and communities.?
