"Not Your Habibti: A Typewriter Project"

TODAY! Tuesday, April 10th

Where: Collis

When: 11 am - 4 pm

[cid:9f6f874b-490f-4b97-9d20-0d0f13bfd72b]

What is the project? The <https://baby-fist.com/social-impact/> <https://baby-fist.com/social-impact/> typewriter<https://baby-fist.com/social-impact/> project is a global project that endeavors to provide a space for all people to find and share their voice, producing uncensored dialogue around gender, sexual harassment, and assault. Yasmeen will be sitting with her typewriter in Collis on April 10th, inviting you and all community members to share personal expereinces with her as she types them down in real-time. The product: tangible, typewritten personal narratives that contribute to conversations about gender.

Project Title: The title is a reclamation and transformation of a common cat call, habibti meaning "my baby," into a statement for women’s empowerment. By saying/wearing this slogan, “You are reclaiming yourself and reinforcing the notion that you are not owned by anyone else.”

Project Goal: The project provides a cathartic moment for Dartmouth community members, Palestinians, and people from around the world to transcend our geographical locations to engage with each other and gender-based social issues.

Other campuses hosting "Not Your Habibti: A Typewriter Project:" Harvard University, Boston College, Wellesley College, Brown University, Tulane University, and Emory University.

Anonymity? Yes! Yasmeen will censor out all names that you give her. If she happens to write it down (because she is typing at the rate you are speaking) she will go back to the name and type over it until it is illegible.

Where will my story be displayed? Yasmeen will use the stories she records in international exhibitions to draw attention to gender-based violence, in addition to her website and other college campuses. Exhibition locations include: Rome, DC, New York, and Poland. If your story gets included in an exhibition there will be no label identifiers ie. name, location, school of origin.

More about Yasmeen: Yasmeen Mjalli is a Palestinian female entrepreneur, activist, and artist. She started a company called <https://baby-fist.com/> <https://baby-fist.com/> Babyfist<https://baby-fist.com> in Palestine, creating a movement to empower women against street harassment and other gendered issues. She contributes to the #MeToo movement in Palestine and now the states through "Not Your Habibti: A Typewriter Project."
