But for real–we are so fortunate to be surrounded by some incredible trails, waterways, and mountains, and we benefit from them every time we go into the out-of-doors. The DOC wouldn't be able to do what it does without the outdoors! It's super important that we take care of the natural spaces that we interact with*, which is why this Saturday is

ESD Stewardship Day 19X!!!

For the first time in history ever, five (FIVE!) stewardship trips from all across the DOC will be going out on Saturday. Then, we'll all be gathering back together on campus for dinner catered by the Box at 5PM to celebrate our day of caring for the natural spaces we love so much!

More details on all the trips going out are below! Email the leaders to sign up :-)

What: DMBC Oak Hill Trail Work Day! We'll be resetting some trail signs, improving drainage on a few trails, and freshening up the berms and jumps on Bermuda!
When: Meet in Robo basement at 11:00AM
Why: Because Oak Hill is so close to campus, folks from Dartmouth end up riding, running, hiking, and enjoying it quite often. But, its trails could use a little shovel love to keep 'em running well for the rest of the season. No trail work knowledge or experience is required!
Leader: Ben Zdasiuk
Gear: A daypack with a water bottle or two, and some sturdy shoes (think hiking boots). Food will be provided.
Blitz: [log in to unmask] to sign up!
What: Come do trail work with CnT! We will be going to Smarts Mountain, located about halfway between Hanover and Mount Moosilauke on the Appalachian Trail. We'll cut some fallen trees off the trail and fix the roof of a privy on the summit (the thru hikers will be very happy).
When: 8:30 AM-4 PM Saturday.
Why: Smarts is a great mountain with beautiful summit fire tower views, and we want to make its trail (and privy) better for the thousands of people who hike it each year.
Leaders: Geordi Geier and Frank Sapienza
Gear: At least 3L of water (it will be 96 degrees on Saturday), hiking shoes, and a small day pack to carry water and an extra layer.
Blitz [log in to unmask] to sign up!
What: Ledyard’s Mink Brook Clean-up
When: Saturday, July 20, 10am-3pm
Why: What would sophomore summer be without Mink Brook? We run, swim and paddle it, and now’s our chance to take care of it too! Come hang with some fun people on a nice day and do something great for our community!
Leaders: Emma Doherty and Coby Gibson
Gear: none needed, just some good walking shoes and clothes that can get a little sweaty/dirty
Contact: [log in to unmask] or [log in to unmask] to sign up!
WHAT: DMC Rumney Conservation! We'll be helping the conservation team fix up Rumney, the popular climbing spot that the DMC runs trips to all the time! Come out to get your hands dirty with their projects including making a staircase of boulders! We'll likely be moving rocks, slinging boulders, splitting rocks into pieces by hammering wedges, digging holes, and having a ton of fun giving back to the climbing haven we're lucky to have so close by!
WHEN: Meet behind Robo @7:50am (leave @8), back by 5pm latest :)
WHY: It'd be great to come if you've ever enjoyed a nice day of climbing (or upwards of 30 days of climbing who knows) at Rumney, but also even if you've never been before! We'll be working on projects such as the staircase that will be around for decades to come and will be used heavily by other climbers! If nothing else- what better way to take out any anger or stress @recruiting @relationships @peopleusingnonreusablewaterbottles @landlords than smashing rocks? No experience necessary!!)
LEADER: Decker Wentz
GEAR: 2L of water, packed lunch/snacks, hiking boots/work boots (or at least closed toed shoes!), long pants recommended, bug spray (!!), sunscreen, and eye protection & gloves if you have them! (if not no worries their team has a few that we can borrow)
BLITZ: [log in to unmask] (with questions about the work/anything re:logistics) and then [log in to unmask] with any gear you need to borrow!
WHAT: CnT Trailwork! (from Dorchester road to Holt's)
WHEN: 8:30am - 4:00pm
WHY: Trailwork is fun! You get to use axes and chop blowdowns. Maintaining our trails is also one of CnT's responsibilities. (There are two CnT trailwork trips this weekend, this one involves less uphill hiking)
LEADER: Madylin Partridge
Gear: 2 liters of water, sturdy shoes/boots, some layers, rain gear just in case (you can borrow this from DOR if needed)
Blitz: [log in to unmask] to sign up!

*It is important to remember that where we hike, bike, climb, paddle, and explore comes with a colonial legacy and a history of exploitation. ESD recognizes that this will not be solved by a single day of stewardship trips but requires continued dialogue and work.
