Why Hasn't the U.S. Ratified the UN Treaty on Women's Rights?
with Government Professor Lisa Baldez

-------

In 1979, the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the international bill of rights for women. 186 countries have ratified the treaty except for Iran, Nauru, Palau, Somalia, Sudan, Tonga - and the United States. Why has the US failed to ratify such an important human rights treaty even Saudi Arabia has ratified? Professor Baldez discusses her upcoming book that explores the possible domestic, political, historical reasons why the US has not ratified CEDAW and its implications.

Also: a recent paper by Professor Baldez on what impact CEDAW would have in the US (http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2106667)
