Four hard-sweatin folks take on the weekly adventure of making our trails better







Cabin and Trail does all this and mooore!



Cabin and Trail leads lots and lots of hikes, cabin overnights, and assorted shenanigans in all weather! And you can borrow any and all winter/rain/hiking gear that you might need - from warm layers to zero degree sleeping bags to rain pants - for FREE!!!! (Just ask!)



Your gear options include but are not limited to:



  *   hiking boots!

  *   puffy jackets!

  *   shell pants/rain pants!

  *   rain jackets/windbreakers!

  *   balaclavas!

  *   sleeping bags!

  *   snowshoes!

  *   cross country skis!



If you'd like to get outside this weekend, sign up for any of the trips below by blitzing the email or clicking the link provided with your dietary restrictions and shoe size!



 As always, blitz the leaders with any and all questions!



This week, extra beginner friendly trips (including trailwork!) are marked with EARTH DAY GREEN (plus you can always check the levels or ask a leader for advice) ((notes on the level system at the end of the email))!!

What: Orienteering!

When: Fri 3:30-6

Why: Heelers come learn to read maps! Use compasses! Finish those leader requirements!

What: Velvet Rocks

When: 2:30-5:30

Why: Start your weekend right with a relaxing 5-mile round trip hike with lots of time for food and friends!

Level : 2

Leaders: Mia Kobs

Cost: FREE

Gear: Hiking boots/sturdy sneakers, 2 liters of water, a couple of layers including a raincoat because it might be rainy

What: Moderately Gentle Trail Work on Moose Mt.

When: Saturday 9am-3pm (could go back earlier)



Why: Hey, have you been looking for a meaningful method of exercise? Well definitely join this trail work trip in which we will prance up Moose Mt. and move anything in the way. If we encounter a moose, we will be moving it. If we encounter a tree, we will also be moving that. Move with me, move with us, move Moose Mountain.

Moose Mountain is a gentle 4.1 mile skip up to the top and back. We will be simply moving branches off the trail and clearing leaves out of drainages. Simple stuff, good work, well paced!



Level: 2 (4.1 mi loop with some gentle work to get your heart pumping)

What: Cardigan Sunsike!

When: Saturday, 5:30pm-9pm

Why: It's a quick and relaxing hike with a bald summit and beautiful sunset views!

Level: 2

What: Norwich Contra Dance!

When: 7:30 PM – 11:15 PM (with optional ride back to campus at 9:45)

Why: Contra dancing is a traditional New England-originated dance that is SUPER FUN and SUPER EASY to learn. Without out a doubt, Contra is by far the best form of dancing, and you’ll understand why when you try it out! What’s more, CnT is paying for everyone who attends, so this Saturday, you’ll be dancing for FREE - THIS IS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY!! A TRUE MUST-ATTEND EVENT!

What: THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE TREK

When: 8 AM - 6PM. Meet at 8 In front of FOCO Saturday mornin'

Why: We're hiking a mountain in an abandoned Air Force base where aliens were sighted in the 1960s. No biggie.

Level: 4, but taken slow

Leaders: Chris Cartwright and Osman Rahim Khan

Cost: $0/We don't talk about money with family

Gear: Water, frame pack, some layers as mountains are known to get cold. Waterproof outer layer in case it rains. Boots, overboots, microspikes. Any jackets/microspikes/overboot needs we will help with. WE ARE GOING TO GET GEAR ANYWAY PLEASE LET US KNOW WHATEVER YOU WANT IT LITERALLY TAKES US FIVE SECONDS TO RENT GEAR AND IT IS FREEEE.

What: Sunday Mount Ascutney Hike!

When: Sunday, April 28th, 10 A.M. to 4 P.M.!

Why: Avoid having a (AS) CUT-KNEE by hiking MOUNT ASCUTNEY for a moderate, 7-mile hike this Sunday! Get ready to have such a HEALTHY-LEG, UNCUT-FOOT and CLEAN-TOE (opposites of (as)cut-knee) TIME!!!

Level: 2.5

Leaders: Elijah Laird and Sasha Kokoshinskiy

Cost: Free!!!

Gear: Boots, gloves, warm layers, microspikes (we got these covered)

What: Franconia Ridge

When: 8am-6pm SUNDAY

Why: Beautiful 8 mile loop ("second most gorgeous hike in the U.S.") Has some steep parts, but also has some good views, great leaders, and high quality snacks.

Level: 4/5

Leaders: Anna Ellis '19 and Frances Mize '22

Cost: FREE

Gear: Gear needed includes a daypack, sturdy hiking boots or sneakers, two liters of water, warm layers, a hat, and gloves. A more specific packing list will be emailed to you once you officially sign up.

What: Smarts!!

When: Sun 9-3

Why: Come hike smarts you smarty you! 7 beautiful miles with incredible views at the end! Great snacks and greater company wowowow

Level: 3

What: Mount Garfield Trail

When: 8am-6pm Sunday

Why: It's gonna be a rainy 12 miles up a pretty chill 4000 footer and being wet is the best bonding experience ever

Level: 4

Leaders: Katie McCabe and George McNulty

Cost: Nuthin'

Gear: Rain gear, hiking boots, and noncotton layers (We can provide you with anything that you need)

A note about levels....



Level 1: Short, easy, super-beginner friendly hikes at a leisurely pace with relatively little elevation gain. Think Gile sunsikes and trips to Mink Brook!



Level 2: Slightly longer but still beginner friendly hikes with slight elevation gain, typically half day trips! Think Holt's Ledge or Moose Mountain!



Level 3: Longer trips with moderate elevation gain and mileages! Think Smarts and Cube!



Level 4: Longer trips with more significant elevation gain and mileages! Think Franc Ridge or the Kinsmans!



Level 5: Trips with the most significant elevation gain and mileages! Think Madison, Adams, and Washington!
