CALL FOR PAPERS
The Department of Southeast Asian Studies of the Goethe-University of
Frankfurt, Germany and
the School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia, invite
interested scholars to participate in the
following jointly organised International Seminar:
"Fiction and Faction in the Malay World"
DATE AND VENUE: Goethe-University of Frankfurt, Germany, 11-12 November 2010
DEADLINES: Paper title and abstract: 31 July 2010; full paper: 30 October 2010.
No conference fee for paper presenters. Presenters are expected to
obtain their own funding for travel
and hotel costs.
The topic of the seminar:
As a sequel to the jointly organised seminar that will be held at the
Goethe-University of Frankfurt,
Germany on 17-18 June 2010, this seminar in November 2010 will serve
as a complementary topic to
"Trade and Finance in the Malay World" since some of the foreigners
and traders who came to the
Malay World wrote fiction and "faction" (writing that portrays real
people or events in a dramatised
manner) during their sojourn - regardless whether they continued to
stay in this region, or returned to
their home country, or migrated to another county. It would be
worthwhile to analyse the works of
fiction, diaries, vignettes, letters and other documents by these
traders or colonial officers who came to
this region since their writings and encounters with the 'natives' to
a certain extent reflect more
accurately the views and personalities of the writers themselves. As
we intend to cross generic and
disciplinary boundaries, we welcome contributions from various fields
to this international seminar,
including any forms of adaptation and translation during the period
in question.
Conference languages: English and Malay. The organisers plan for a
conference publication in English
aimed towards a broader international audience. If enough
Malay-language contributions are accepted
for presentation, a separate Malay-language publication might be considered.
Convenors:
Prof. Dr. Arndt Graf, Dept. of Southeast Asian Studies,
Goethe-University of Frankfurt

Dr. Mohamad Rashidi Pakri, School of Humanities, Universiti Sains
