Dear colleagues,

We kindly invite you to attend and/or present at the biennial national
conference of the Australian Society of Indonesian Language Educators,
ASILE 2018, in Melbourne, Friday 28 - Sunday 30 September 2018. The ASILE
conference is the premier event for Indonesian language and culture
researchers and educators across Australia. We also encourage you to
promote this event to your colleagues, students and other relevant networks.
For registration, abstract submission and further information, please
visit our website at: https://arts.unimelb.edu.au/e/asile-2018#registration The
deadline for abstracts is 15 May 2018.

The theme for ASILE 2018 is Cultivating Literacy, focusing on the
integration of social and cultural knowledge that is necessary to truly
understand the different contexts in which language is used. The conference
invites presentation and workshop proposals on reading and writing in all
its forms and variation. It also welcomes contributions focusing on
literacy beyond the written word, relating to contemporary media such as
film, television, visual arts, social media, comics, graffiti and signage.

Confirmed keynote speakers are Dr Pudentia (Lecturer, Faculty of
Humanities, Universitas Indonesia, and Chair, Association for Oral
Traditions) and Dr Mark Ellis AM (Ophthalmologist, East Timor Eye Program
(ETEP) and Director, Sumba Eye Program (SEP), Sumba). Dr Pudentia will talk
about strategies to incorporate oral traditions in Indonesian language and
culture teaching, while Dr Ellis will highlight the social, educational and
professional benefits of applying cultural literacy in international health
care programs. We are expecting a third keynote speaker from Yogyakarta
focusing on the integration of games and performance genres in language and
culture education.

The peer-reviewed International Journal of Indonesian Studies (IJIS) is
accepting a selection of conference papers for publication in a special
issue (only after acceptance by the ASILE committee). For more info about
the journal, please refer to

Our Platinum sponsors include the The University of Melbourne, La Trobe
University, and Monash University, and our Silver sponsors the Victorian
Indonesian Language Teachers’ Association (VILTA). We are also receiving
support from the Indonesian Language and Culture Centre of Victoria and
Tasmania (BBBIVT), the Australia-Indonesia Youth Association (AIYA) and La
Trobe University’s Bahasa Indonesia Students’ Association (BISA).

Your collaboration in promoting Indonesian Language and Culture Studies in
Australia through ASILE 2018 is much appreciated.

We hope to welcome you, your colleagues and students in Melbourne, September
2018.

Best regards,

Edwin Jurriens
