for the ERC Starting Grant Project "FoodTransforms: Transformations of Food in the Eastern Mediterranean Late Bronze Age"

The ERC Starting Grant Project "FoodTransforms: Transformations of Food in the Eastern Mediterranean Late Bronze Age" is offering a 50% (TVL-13) PostDoc or PhD position in Egyptology. "FoodTransforms" analyses the transformative dynamics of early globalization in the Eastern Mediterranean Late Bronze Age with regard to food practices based on the integration of archaeological, textual and scientific analyses (the analysis of food remains in human dental calculus and pottery vessels).

The successful applicant will integrate the results of organic residue analyses for Egyptian vessels bearing hieratic content labels with textual evidence for food from Egyptian textual sources. The identification of the vessels' contents with chemical analyses will bring a novel perspective to long debated readings of Egyptian words for food and it will allow us to link so-far unclear words for different kinds of food. The exact reading of these substances in the texts will be a major step forward in understanding Egyptian food practices as well as trade with foreign spices.

Requirements:
.    Master or PhD in Egyptology or a closely related field
.    Extensive knowledge of Hieratic
.    Good knowledge of all phases of the Egyptian language
.    Experience in teamwork and openness for cooperation with natural scientists.

Duration of the position: 1st July 2017 - 30th June 2020

The candidate's position and work will be associated both with Philipp Stockhammer at LMU Munich and Joachim Quack at Heidelberg University.
