 works on ancient Greek food:
Andrew Dalby Siren feasts: a history of food and gastronomy in Greece
London and New York 1996 which begins with a discussion in depth of scene
in a play by Menander (c4th BCE) of a sacrificial feast.
Dalby has also published Food in the ancient world from A to Z where you
can look up individual foodstuffs, places authors etc and find the ancient
sources and modern references.
Another excellent work is John Wilkins and Shaun Hill Food in the Ancient
world 2006, which concentrates mainly on the Greek world, and discusses
Athenaeus . There is also another book edited by Wilkins on Athenaeus, but
this is more about his philosophy than his food.
