I've spent quite a bit of time outside this winter along trails and lake shoreline... The cone and catkin litter along the trails and shoreline is amazing. I've never seen that before to the extent I'm seeing it this
season. Under every Hemlock and birches, alders and other trees loaded with the remains of working birds. Also I have a black oil feeder up at my icefishing bobhouse which I visit weekly and the chickadees are emptying it. Buy not happening at home... So the
birds look to be feeding on wild foods and making a good living at it.
Hi Steve,
It's not your fault! Same situation at my feeders.
I don't know the reason, I thought about the intense cold as a possible reason for the inordinate activity, but suspect it has more to do with other factors. I'll let Chris, or Kent, or Pam weigh in on that.
I have a few juncos daily as opposed to the previous twenty to thirty, one white-throated sparrow, and my resident cardinals, chickadees, titmice, downy woodpecker, blue jays, mourning doves, white-breasted nuthatch, and two Carolina Wrens.
Mike
