Software Carpentry 2-day workshop: Building programs with Pythonhttp://lcimages.s3.amazonaws.com/data/feat_img/643/220/1510091431.jpg Date: Monday, December 4-5, 2017 Time: 9:00am - 4:30pm Location: Carson Instructional Center (Carson 61), Baker-Berry Library Software Carpentry (More details and syllabus: https://nesclic.github.io/2017-12-04-dartmouth/) aims to help researchers get their work done in less time and with less pain by teaching them basic research computing skills. This hands-on workshop will cover basic concepts and tools, including program design, version control, data management, and task automation. Participants will be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems. For more information on what we teach and why, please see our paper "Best Practices for Scientific Computing". Who: The course is aimed at graduate students and other researchers. You don't need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop. THAT THEY HAVE ADMINISTRATIVE PRIVILEGES ON. THEY SHOULD HAVE A FEW SPECIFIC SOFTWARE PACKAGES INSTALLED (LISTED BELOW). THEY ARE ALSO REQUIRED TO ABIDE BY SOFTWARE CARPENTRY'S CODE OF CONDUCT. Materials will be provided in advance of the workshop and large-print handouts are available if needed by notifying the organizers in advance. TA Orientation Dec 4&5 Whether you're about to TA for the first time or will be TAing again, this is an opportunity to learn from experienced TAs about a variety of topics, such as the first day of class, connecting with students, time management, resources at Dartmouth, inclusive classrooms, lesson design, grading, and tricky situations. You will also have the opportunity to do some practice teaching. The Orientation will be on two days: Monday Dec. 4 (9am-4pm, including lunch) and Tuesday Dec 5 (10am-1pm, including lunch). An additional session for international TAs will be on Tuesday Dec 5, 1:30-3pm.
While registration will be open until orientation, please register early so we can recruit experienced TAs best suited to work with those who plan to attend and finalize the program based on your needs. Are you a graduate student or postdoc in the sciences and working on a writing project such as a dissertation or manuscript? Could you use support and protected time to make progress with your writing? On Tuesday, December 12 and Wednesday, December 13, Kresge Physical Sciences Library will host a writer’s retreat for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in the sciences. During this two-day retreat, you’ll have: dedicated time to work on your writing project a presentation by Dr. Sarah B. Smith, lecturer in the department of Environmental Studies and the Institute for Writing and Rhetoric a one-on-one consultation about your writing time to engage with a peer writing community free lunch and snacks When?
