Hi Bob,

Great egrets (and other heron species) frequently engage in post-nuptial movements, often north from their coastal NE breeding range. I've seen them in the bayous off Lake Champlain on a number of occasions and well up the Hudson from their Long Island breeding colonies. For five days in the late 90s, we had an immature little blue heron that hunted peepers off a muskrat lodge in our front yard wetland, which we affectionately call Coyote Hollow.

I’m sure you’ve spotted a Great Egret, as you first noted - a bit rare for sightings around here, but not at all out of the realm of possibility. Check out eBird for Vermont sightings over the past 5 years….
