Weather: There was rain in the early morning, with a period of heavy rain and thunderstorms this afternoon. Light to moderate winds were mainly from the southeast. In between the rain, skies were mostly cloudy, with some periods of more sunshine than clouds. Temperatures were in the sixties. Raptor Observations: Just before the ominous clouds and thunderstorms hit, a large burst of broad-wings and Bald Eagles began booking it overhead. We had the reverse effect of yesterday, with a large pre-storm (rather than post-storm) movement. It was an amazing sight to see these birds moving against a backdrop of storm clouds. After the storm passed, only a couple of harriers followed. Interestingly, a few more adult birds were seen today (including an adult female harrier and two adult broad-wings). Non-raptor Observations: Hundreds of Cedar Waxwings were on the move. A Yellow-billed Cuckoo was calling this morning after the rain. Predictions: Light to moderate southwesterly winds are expected tomorrow, with partly sunny skies in the morning and possible thunderstorms in the afternoon. Temperatures will be in the sixties to low seventies. We could have another big movement just before the storm hits. This would be a wonderful end to the season. ======================================================================= Report submitted by Anna Stunkel () Derby Hill Bird Observatory information may be found at: http://onondagaaudubon.com/derby-hill-bird-observatory/ --b1_25199645e471c908c1cef3bd6654d4e6 Content-Type: text/html; charset="us-ascii" <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=us-ascii"><b>Derby Hill Bird Observatory</b><br>Mexico, New York, USA<br><br><table border="1"><tr><td colspan="4" bgcolor="c0c0e0"><b>Daily Raptor Counts: </b>May 30, 2017</td></tr><tr><td><b><font color="2020c0">Species</font></b></td><td><font color="2020c0">Day's Count</font></td><td><font color="2020c0">Month Total</font></td><td><font color="2020c0">Season Total</font></td></tr><tr><td>Black Vulture</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">6</td></tr> <tr><td>Turkey Vulture</td><td align="right">27</td><td align="right">1875</td><td align="right">25910</td></tr> <tr><td>Osprey</td><td align="right">5</td><td align="right">157</td><td align="right">439</td></tr> <tr><td>Bald Eagle</td><td align="right">35</td><td align="right">525</td><td align="right">903</td></tr> <tr><td>Northern Harrier</td><td align="right">7</td><td align="right">140</td><td align="right">628</td></tr> <tr><td>Sharp-shinned Hawk</td><td align="right">2</td><td align="right">1637</td><td align="right">4275</td></tr> <tr><td>Cooper's Hawk</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">13</td><td align="right">339</td></tr> <tr><td>Northern Goshawk</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">3</td><td align="right">10</td></tr> <tr><td>Red-shouldered Hawk</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">3</td><td align="right">806</td></tr> <tr><td>Broad-winged Hawk</td><td align="right">615</td><td align="right">7192</td><td align="right">29492</td></tr> <tr><td>Red-tailed Hawk</td><td align="right">13</td><td align="right">365</td><td align="right">3923</td></tr> <tr><td>Rough-legged Hawk</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">6</td><td align="right">135</td></tr> <tr><td>Golden Eagle</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">2</td><td align="right">39</td></tr> <tr><td>American Kestrel</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">25</td><td align="right">501</td></tr> <tr><td>Merlin</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">12</td><td align="right">81</td></tr> <tr><td>Peregrine Falcon</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">14</td><td align="right">27</td></tr> <tr><td>Unknown Accipiter</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">6</td></tr> <tr><td>Unknown Buteo</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">9</td></tr> <tr><td>Unknown Falcon</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">6</td></tr> <tr><td>Unknown Eagle</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">1</td></tr> <tr><td>Unknown Raptor</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">2</td><td align="right">11</td></tr> <tr><td>Swainson's Hawk</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">5</td></tr> <tr><td><b><font color="c02020">Total:</font></b></td><td align="right"><font color="c02020">704</font></td><td align="right"><font color="c02020">11971</font></td><td align="right"><font color="c02020">67552</font></td></tr></table><br><br><table cellspacing="2" cellpadding="2"><tr><td>Observation start time: </td><td>09:00:00 </td></tr><tr><td>Observation end time: </td><td>16:00:00 </td></tr><tr><td>Total observation time: </td><td>5.5 hours</td></tr><tr><td>Official Counter</td><td>Anna Stunkel</td></tr><tr><td>Observers: </td><td>Kevin McGann, Peter Davidson</td></tr></table><br><br><br><b>Visitors:</b><br>Rosemary Hanagan.<br><br><b>Weather:</b><br>There was rain in the early morning, with a period of heavy rain and thunderstorms this afternoon.
