I led a bird walk at the Richmond Conservation Land in Orford this morning. We had 3 pairs of Buffleheads on the open water of Jacob's Brook Outlet. I noticed some were reported at Boston Lot Lake earlier this week, all flagged as rare by eBird ( late migrants). We also heard a Yellow-throated Vireo singing in the same spot Bill Shepard and I had one a few years ago. Bill, I've had one in the same trees every year since at this time of year. The beginning birders in the group got great looks at a cooperative Scarlet Tanager, (well, I got excited, too! ). We managed about twenty five other species.
Later, I made a quick stop at Bedell Bridge State Park in Haverhill where I had another Yellow-throated Vireo, this male was carrying nesting materials. I don't think I have ever had this species here before. I also had a Green Heron in the wooded swamp and a Northern Harrier flying over the cornfields. Quite a few very vocal and active Warbling Vireos and Baltimore Orioles at both sites.
