It was "a good day out" at the Bedell Covered Bridge State Historic Site. Twenty-two participants identified 48 bird species. The number could have gone to 49 had we been able to identify an accipiter that offered us only a brief glimpse as it raced by overhead.
The morning got off to great start with a peregrine falcon flyover. Other highlights included three adult, female hooded mergansers "herding" their presumably combined brood of youngsters numbering 15. The flycatcher family was well-represented with five species recorded: willow (3), least (3), great-crested (2), eastern phoebe (1) and eastern kingbird (4). Among the woodland warblers the standout sighting was good views of two blackpoll warblers that were first heard but ultimately tracked down thanks to the persistence of ten viewers.
A complete list of the morning's sightings can be found using the following eBird link.
Thanks to Mascoma Chapter Steering Committee members George Clark, Jeff MacQueen and Blake Allison for jointly leading the walk and to Jeff for compiling the event's sightings.
