At 7:00 PM on Monday March 14, 2016, Matt Tarr, an Associate Professor Wildlife Specialist from the UNH Cooperative Extension, is to speak on “Exotic Shrubs and Songbird Breeding Success” in the Mayer Room of the Howe Library in Hanover, NH. His illustrated talk, arranged by the Mascoma Chapter of New Hampshire Audubon and the Hanover Conservancy, is free and open to the public.
Although the threat posed by introduced plants to our native plant communities has often been a focus of attention in Upper Valley towns, less is known about the impact of exotic plants on our native songbird populations. Matt Tarr has been investigating this relationship in the Common Yellowthroat, one of our colorful nesting warblers. Part of his work has been concerned with whether the feeding of young is affected by the proportion of native versus exotic plants in a territory. We’re looking forward to hearing about this important research.
