Blake Allison's comments on the distress surely felt by many who read the
sequence of events on Lake Morey this past weekend is much appreciated and
personally consciousness-raising. Why did I myself not try to "do
something" except reflect "Well, they probably counted 2 successful
loon fledgings on Lake Morey and now this cancels that out." Why did I,
sitting cozy at home out of the pouring rain speculating on the mechanics
of such a rescue on ice, not even try to think of whom might be called for
advice and/or action?

For many ordinary birdwatchers such as myself, one answer might be that the
experts seemed to already be aware via UV-BIRDERS and on the scene and, if
there was someone to call on a weekend, they would surely know that and do
it.

Nonetheless, wishing I had TRIED to do something, I echo Cecelia Blair's
comment that it would be good to hear what, if anything, the various
organizations interested in loons are prepared to do about
such predicaments in the future. Meanwhile, thanks to those who were there
and reported on the situation.
