It would be good to know what each of these organizations protocols are about rescuing birds.
Several years ago a few of us were very concerned about two Canadian geese at Lake Runnemede in Windsor. Each had one wing injury preventing the bird from flying. These birds made use of the open water on the back side of Lake Runnemede and would rest and find their safety together out on the ice. When we asked VINS for help, VINS let us know that they don't go out on the water to try to retrieve a bird. The bird needs to be accessible on land. Further they do not save birds with the more serious kinds of wing injuries these birds appeared to have. I forget the exact details on the types of injuries they feel they can or can't successfully take care of, but the point is that the birds need to be able to recover their normal functioning or VINS will euthanize them. These particular birds survived for a month, maybe two, but then someone at Lake Runnemede who had seen their predicament decided to shoot them both. This happened in the middle of the day and was illegal as that is a town park. At this point I was able to retrieve one of the birds and took it to Fish and Wildlife who examined the bird and said yes, it had been shot, but no one was ever confronted as the shooter.
Animals who are in distress are indeed painful to witness, I certainly. To share information and ideas on how to handle these situations would be great.
