Beautiful pictures! I have also seen just a few black squirrels in Vermont--don't recall where--and up north in Canada, as in the Ottawa region, there are only black squirrels. I am guessing this is a variant of gray squirrel rather than red...

We used to have only reds 30 years ago-lots of them. Now we only have a few, and several grays. Some years ago we had some red squirrels with white tails. You can see them here:

The comments on the color variations in squirrels are interesting.

We have had red squirrels at our feeders here for 30 years, and grays on an occasional basis the past few years. We don't have oaks here, so gray squirrels do not have their preferred food. This year, however, we have one squirrel which appears to be a cross between the two species. It is nearly twice as large as a red, but much smaller than a gray, and is white underneath, but red and gray on back and sides. VCE says it is a red, but I am not convinced.
Interesting times...

We regularly get both gray and red. This year its has been four grays and a couple of reds. I put out coarse, cracked corn to divert them from the sunflower seed and meet with some success, but they do like their sunflower seed. The squirrels grudgingly share the platform feeder with the blue jays.

I've been feeding birds here in Orford for twenty years. Only in the past few years have I had Grey Squirrels at my feeders. This winter so far Greys outnumber Reds.

Today I saw my first ever grey squirrel on this property in an apple tree by the feeders. Is this a local shift or is it happening elsewhere?
