RR birders: It may be considered illegal and trespassing to walk on rail road property. Please be careful about that, too. No birders should risk legal complications and negative public relations. Michael.

Hi Kathy

Their schedule is pretty flexible. The railroad will have two crews that go on duty every morning – they’ll probably start at 7am. One in White River, one in Newport. When the train leaves White River depends on how much switching the crew has to do before heading north. Between White River & Ely, they may run from White River to Ely with their salt cars, then return to White River with empties before taking the rest of their freight north. That means there could be three runs in the morning. The other train is the one coming down from Newport. He’ll be down in the afternoon, but his schedule will vary wildly depending on how many stops he has to make along the way. And there is all the track equipment moving around – worth keeping your eyes open.

Hi everyone –

Just a heads up about the railroad tracks between White River Jct. and Newport, VT. There are now at least two trains running every weekday starting today. The railroad has been working on the track. As each section gets completed, the speed limit is raised – often dramatically. There will be places where track speed is 30 mph, eventually to be 40.  Don’t get caught off guard on the high banks over the Ompompanoosuc or Waits Rivers, we’d hate for you to break a good scope.
