The small family of crows I regularly see for their daily bread became quite hysterical about this last big snow. I heard a new form of cry I hadn't heard before. This was after I had fed them their usual amount. One bird started a loud, more rapid cry that sounded desperate and kept on and on until I caved in and went outside for another round of food. They also stayed on the ground longer and in the deep snow, floundering around searching for whatever they may have missed. Then they floundered over to the compost to dig there. This was such a different picture of crows from the usual caution they show.

What I have been giving them is certainly not full life support, but with this type of weather, maybe they aren't finding the other kinds of things that they were, and so felt completely dependent on me.

Today I just fed them once the usual amount. Later they asked me for more but not in the frantic way, and then they flew off.

Sometimes more crows have joined them, another family,  no more, but this has been very rare and hasn't happened with the recent snows.

If anyone needs a Blue Jay or 2 (10)…..let me know.

I counted 30 (more ?) this morning at our feeder.  They love the ground food I put out.

They are quite striking, and entertaining.  Rather dominant in their big numbers.

We regularly have 12.
