Just in time for summer, the Office of Outreach has developed a handy guide and forms that will be of interest if you plan on working with either a high school student or a non-Dartmouth undergrad in your research area. Please refer to the OSP website (links below) for guidance and forms or contact Nancy Serrell in the Outreach office.

The goal of the Dartmouth College Summer Research Internship is to increase the participation of students in scientific research and to encourage them to prepare for careers in research, medicine, and science education.

The program provides high-school students and non-Dartmouth undergraduates with hands-on experience working with a team including Dartmouth faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows or graduate and undergraduate students on a new or ongoing research project. The number of research internships available for students varies each summer, depending on the availability of faculty mentors. The Office of Science & Technology Outreach will publicize openings.

Research interns may be immersed in reading the literature related to the project, learning experimental or field techniques, and assisting with experiments or data analysis.

Internships may last from 8-12 weeks; students are expected to participate in research on a schedule approved by their faculty mentor. A stipend will be provided.

Students participating in an internship are responsible for preparing a 1-2 page report on their research project and submitting it to their Internship Sponsor at the end of their internship.

Eligibility:

* Dartmouth summer research internships are for high school students (rising 11th grade and above) or non-Dartmouth undergraduates with a "B" average or better. Students must have reached their 16th birthday by the day the summer internship begins.

* Priority will be given to students from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in scientific research (African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Native Alaskan, Native Hawaiian) who meet eligibility criteria and have a high probability of fulfilling the educational goals of this program.

* Some internships may be limited to U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

  * The program requires students to be able to commute daily to Dartmouth College.

To apply, students must submit to the Office of Science & Technology Outreach:

* A completed application form<http://medicine.uchc.edu/prospective/hcop/forms/app_hssrap.pdf>, including a statement of interest in the sciences.

* An official high school transcript.

* Two letters of recommendation, at least one from a science teacher.

* A signed Parental/Guardian Acknowledgement, Consent and Release Form.

Important Dates

* Internships are available June to August (start/end dates may vary).

* The application deadline (usually early April) is publicized when research opportunities are announced.
