I had an afternoon appointment in Haverhill today, so left Concord early and joined Mark Krenitsky for some birding mostly in Enfield.
We started and ended at McDaniel’s Marsh (Springfield), where there were 11 Ring-necked Ducks, 8 Common Mergansers, 2 Bufflehead, 2 Horned Grebes, 75 Tree Swallows, 3 Barn Swallows, and (noon-ish return trip) a dozen Yellow-rumped Warblers foraging low along the outlet stream.
George Pond had another 13 Ring-necks and 5 Buffleheads, plus a singing Field Sparrow a little ways down Bog Road.
Two breeding-plumaged Horned Grebes were on Mascoma Lake.
Working my way north along the Connecticut, I stopped at a few places:
1) above Wilder Dam, where the 6 Red-necked and 2 Horned Grebes previously-reported to UV Birds were still present.
2) Post Pond in Lyme (nothing)
3) Reed’s Marsh (ring-necks and hoodies)
4) Bedell Bridge SP (Haverhill) – 1 Palm Warbler
Overall not that bad for a cold rainy day.
