The Short-Tailed Shrew is the most abundant mammal in New England. The Shrike has chosen a food that should be available and abundant.  Michael.

Subject: [UVB] Northern Shrike Strikes Again

The Northern Shrike returned to our feeders just now and pulled another Short-tailed Shrew out from under the snow.  After a fierce struggle the shrike killed the shrew with a bite to the back of the neck.  Afterwards, it made several other bites to the neck to make sure the shrew was dead, then it flew off into the woods with its prey.  What a fierce hunter!
