A Northern Shrike was just at our feeders. The chickadees all left, but the shrike stayed and perched about a foot above the snow. It seemed to be listening to activity under the snow, where a variety of critters have made tunnels to the fallen seeds and suet.

After about ten minutes the shrike pounced and came up with a Short-tailed Shrew. There was quite a tangle for a minute or so, and the shrew seemed to have a chance to bite the shrike. But then the shrike was able to get it at the back of the neck and made the kill. The shrike then flew off into the woods carrying the unfortunate shrew in it's beak.

Wow!
