They seem perfectly dead, exuding the odor of a dead body as well as going into a state of suspended animation. I remember one apparently dead in a Have-A-Heart trap which I dumped out and studied to make sure it was dead. The appearance of death was completely convincing to me, and I took my time. I went in the house, leaving the dead possum outside, but a while later it was gone!

She didn't know who she should call to report a dead Possum, wondering that her dog had killed it because she "barely touched it". We bought thought of the expression, Playing Possum, and when she went back out to check on the body, it was gone! Maybe they are just moving into the area?
