I have seen a few possums in Windsor. They have been coming up north for years. Thornton Burgess in his wonderful series of children's books from the very early twentieth century wrote about "Unc Billy Possum" who had "come up from Old Virginny". Burgess lived on the Cape and wrote about the animals of New England.

Where I lived in North Carolina, we'd see them walking slowly along the back lanes at night, then hanging upside down asleep in the bushes during the day. They are harmless unless attacked. Even then they may be more apt to play dead than bite, but they do have very sharp teeth.

I meant to add that I have lived in this town since 1929 and that is the first I have ever seen in the Upper Valley.

As I write this at 5:00 PM Friday, the 17th, an opossom is sniffing around at the bottom of the pole that holds my sunflower feeder.  I live in residential Hanover two blocks from the College gymnasium!

We have deer in our yard every night but this is a first!
