Hi

My nephew pHred, his girlfriend Libby, and I went to Waterbury Ctr. VT and
found a Northern Hawk Owl that was reported back on December 15th. We
found it perched in a tree on the western side of Rt 100, a little bit
north of the center of town. It was a bit bedraggled by the rain, but even
a soggy Hawk Owl is pretty handsome. After rewarding ourselves at the Lake
Champlain Chocolate store, we decided to head to Addison. Along the way, we
found one dark morph Rough-legged Hawk along Rt 22a in Vergennes, another
dark morph and a light morph bird along Rt 17, and then two Snowy Owls. One
was across from the Dead Creek goose viewing area and the other was a bit
further west. Further along, in West Addison, we found a mixed flock of
about two dozen birds, mostly Lapland Longspurs, plus about 5 Snow Buntings
and at least one Horned Lark. We finished up at the Crown Point Bridge. The
water was open a little ways north of the bridge. From the walkway, we
scoped an immature Bald Eagle, numerous gulls (mostly Herrings and a few
Greater Black-backed) and two separate rafts of ducks, one mostly Common
Mergansers, the other mostly Common Goldeneyes with a few Scaup mixed in.
There was another, much larger raft of ducks a bit farther north.
