Ed Hack and I visited a few localities today. Some of the highlights
were as follows:

Hoyt's Landing, Springfield: 29 Hooded Mergansers, 15 Common
Mergansers, a Ring-billed Gull, and a male Belted Kingfisher.

Springfield Meadows (area of Route 5 and Old Connecticut River Road):
about 400 Canada Geese in the Connecticut River, 8 American Black
Ducks, 50 Mallards, 7 Common Goldeneyes, 4 Hooded Mergansers, a Common
Merganser, an adult Red-tailed Hawk, a Carolina Wren seen at close
range, about 20 Snow Buntings, 6 American Tree Sparrows, a Song
Sparrow, and about 25 Dark-eyed Juncos.

Lake Runnemede, Windsor, VT: 40 Canada Geese, 10 American Black Ducks,
11 Mallards, 4 Common Mergansers, an adult Bald Eagle, a Northern
Flicker, a Winter Wren, 7 American Tree Sparrows, and a Song Sparrow.

The Bald Eagle was perched in a deciduous tree on the south side slope
above Lake Runnemede and near houses in Windsor village. For some
minutes, 2 American Crows noisily mobbed the eagle, with one crow
approaching the eagle along its perching limb to within a distance
estimated at only 2 crow lengths away. Despite the provocations, the
eagle held its position, and eventually the 2 crows abandoned their
effort to drive away the eagle and flew off.
