A good day for casual observation on the home property. A male northern cardinal brightened up the feeders in the early morning. Cardinal visits have been very rare over the last few years. The pair of red-tailed hawks, not together but seen in different parts of the yard within the same time frame, was unusual and fuels suspicions from the summer there may be a nesting pair nearby given the frequency with which at least one bird was seen. American goldfinch numbers are climbing. Last week's high was 15, nearly 20 today.
