I had a memorable experience at Kendall Station this evening, on the RR tracks between the two ponds. Light was perfect with the setting sun, and wind dropping. I watched a mesmerizing display along the edges of the small pond, as 5 Palm Warblers and 2 Rusty Blackbirds (a male and female) foraged on the muddy shoreline (water levels are extremely low on the river right now). At one point, the male Rusty broke into song (stretching definition of the term) for a full couple of minutes. The Palms occasionally went airborne to join a dozen Yellow-rumped Warblers (all but one a male), who were actively sallying after a dense hatch of midges. A phoebe was also hawking insects over the pond, while Barn and Tree swallows zoomed through. It was a riot of color and sound, very cool! Chris -- Chris Rimmer Vermont Center for Ecostudies P.O.
