We use Skype for both local and international conversations but would be
hesitant about using it as a regular communication tool for classes.  We
suffer regular drop out on even local communications dependent on network
loading.  With Google Chat random pairing would be difficult and
conversations are not recorded only a history of chats.  However there are
third party solutions, e.g. replay video capture $40 per station, that
record two channel conversation with Google Chat and Google is encouraging
developers to create additional value added services.  However the jump to
multiple users is quite a big one.

Skype gives us the most problems but can also be surprising as last month we
had a great video link between Mozambique and the UK but failed on a local
UK voice link.

We have designed a simple but effective language lab that runs on XP and
above allows pairing in any form, directed or automatic, and also enables an
instructor to deliver synchronous questions and students can record their
answers individually which are then saved for review.  In pairing mode
students can talk  to each other and record whatever part of the
conversation they wish.  An instructor can listen in anonymously and
contribute but the instructors comments are not recorded.  elanglab in the
USA offer similar functionality.

No hardware apart from a good headset with mic is needed apart from storage
of original audio and student recordings.

Kate
