Continuing a two-year tradition, there will be a public birding walk as part of the annual Hanover-Norwich Christmas Bird Count this Sunday, January 1 from 9-10:30 am. Participants will meet at Dan and Whit's General Store in Norwich, and walk from there. Our route will be a loop starting on Beaver Meadow Road, turning onto Hopson Road, up through Hillside Cemetery, cutting through to Pine Tree Road, back to Hopson, then returning to Dan and Whit's. Total distance will be about one mile, with a moderate elevational gain and fairly level ground, nearly all of it on paved road. Chris Rimmer will lead the walk. Our pace will be leisurely, with an emphasis on ensuring that everyone sees the birds we encounter. Children are welcome, but if under 10 years of age should be accompanied by an adult. Recent birds of interest in the vicinity of this route include Wild Turkey, Red-tailed Hawk, Pileated Woodpecker, American Robin, Eastern Bluebird, Dark-eyed Junco, and Pine Siskin. Although no severe weather is in the forecast, participants should be prepared for cold and potentially wet conditions, with sturdy and warm footwear (snow boots recommended). Please bring binoculars if possible. The walk will take place rain or shine, unless conditions of heavy snow or rain persist. If in doubt, call Chris anytime after 8:00 am at 802-922-8495. -- Chris Rimmer Vermont Center for Ecostudies P.O. Box 420 Norwich, VT 05055 802-649-1431 ext. 1 http://www.vtecostudies.org
