On a somewhat foggy, pleasantly cool, morning today, eight participants in a program arranged by the Mascoma Chapter of the Audubon Society of New Hampshire spent about 2.5 hours birding in the vicinity of Lake Runnemede in Windsor, VT. Among more than 30 bird species encountered, some of the highlights included Canada Geese, Wood Ducks, Mallards, a Great Blue Heron, Green Herons, both a mature and an immature Bald Eagle, a Cooper's Hawk, dozens of Rock Pigeons, 2 Chimney Swifts, at least several hummingbirds, Belted Kingfisher, conspicuous Eastern Kingbirds, a silent Red-eyed Vireo, a singing Carolina Wren, numerous catbirds and Cedar Waxwings, a Common Yellowthroat, and a male Indigo Bunting. Ed Hack has generously offered to prepare an eBird list, which I can forward at your request. After the scheduled walk by Lake Runnemede, four participants continued on in an unscheduled supplemental excursion to Kennedy (= Mill) Pond in Windsor, where a highlight was a mature Bald Eagle which flew in and perched in a white pine where it was nicely viewed through scopes. Despite extensive open flats along edges of the water, no herons or shorebirds were seen there during our mid morning visit.
